The never ending project
I’ve written posts on this “project” before. I’ve also said its finally coming to an “end” before. I think I’ve finally realised that this isn’t ever going to stop. Sure, I might take breaks from it, or I might just go at it even harder than ever. But as for it ending, well that may well be the day I move on from this world.
Over the years I have worked with many Models and created an ‘OK’ body of work, I’ve shot a fair number of weddings, I’ve worked on numerous projects and been a part of a small collective of photographers. None of this work will be remembered by anyone. All except one body of work. My never ending project. ‘Home’.
This is my archive, my legacy
Since I had the conscious thought of documenting my family as a project, I’ve an archive in excess of 14000 images. And that’s after I went through and cut the utter crap. There are pictures that look the same, only a different day, month or year distinguish them. There are a few pictures that are actually good. None of this matters though. By time I’m gone, I want them all to be prints. The digital archive in 40 years may not exist, but prints will survive. They will be passed down from my children, to the grandchildren and so on.
Documenting my family helps keep my eye in. Stay sharp. When I work on other projects, being sharp is a must. I wouldn’t expect to be able to not take a picture for a year, and then jump straight back in. This work helps, and a bonus to that is it builds the archive even more.
So. It’s never going to end. It will grow and grow and grow. And my wife Kim, will grow more and more annoyed at the thousands of prints that will be going with us where ever we move and live.
